Stella Polaris was launched in 2021 as a dream project for Childhood, funded by Svenska Postkodlotteriet. The aim of the project is to coordinate, encourage and intensify AI-related initiatives that can support the work against child sexual abuse in Sweden. The project brings together police, prosecutors and child rights actors with AI experts, programmers, researchers and technology companies to jointly develop new AI-related solutions or encourage the use of existing tools that can protect and empower children.
AI Round table
The idea for Stella Polaris was born after an expert meeting in 2019 where Childhood, together with the Global Child Forum and at the initiative of H.M. Queen Silvia, brought together leading experts in AI and child safety to discuss the role AI can play in protecting children from sexual abuse. During the meeting, it became clear that there is a strong commitment and interest from other sectors to contribute more to protecting children from abuse and that there is great potential to streamline the work through higher levels of collaboration between different sectors and expertise.
An AI hub for knowledge on AI and child sexual abuse
The knowledge centre is a central part of Stella Polaris that brings together research and articles related to AI and child sexual abuse, along with a list of existing AI tools in use today. You can find resources for AI developers and for actors who could benefit from using existing AI solutions. The AI hub’s knowledge centre will also be accessible to students, researchers and industry who want to approach the topic so that existing solutions can benefit more people and new development initiatives can build on what already exists.

Stella Polaris takes its name both from the Polestar and the name of a secret Finnish intelligence operation during World War II. Like the Polestar, the Stella Polaris AI hub is intended to be a reliable guide, while at the same time being the intelligence operation of the new century – in the service of children.
